Access Keys

Validated CSS and HTML

Our accessible sites are validated against the W3C's HTML and CSS validators.  This ensures that our websites are error free, quick to load and compatible  with most web browsers including internet explorer, Firefox and portable devices  like PDA's and smart-phones.

Access Keys

Access keys aren't just for disabled users, anyone can use them in a standard  browser following the instructions below.

PC using Internet Explorer

  1. Press and hold down the ALT key.
  2. Then press the appropriate number or letter (see the list above) and press    Enter (or Return) key and you will be taken to the appropriate page.

PC using Netscape

  1. Press and hold down the ALT key.
  2. Then press the appropriate number or letter (see the list above) and you    will then be taken to the appropriate page.

PC using Netscape 4 or below

  1. These older versions of Netscape where created before access key technology    was available and therefore are not supported.

Apple Mac - Internet Explorer

  1. Press and hold down the CONTROL key.
  2. Then press the appropriate number or letter (see the list below) and press    Enter (or Return) key.

Semantic mark up

All our pages are accessible and make sense when seen without the attached  CSS file. Where possible we avoid using unnecessary mark up such as divs ids  and classes

Alternative image tags

All images that relate to the content are labeled with what  is known as alternative text a.k.a. alt tags. Images that are purely decorative  are placed within the CSS file so that they do not effect the content of the  document.

Text links

All links are built with text rather than images. This might  sound boring but even the navigation on our own website (above) is built purely  from CSS. There is little excuse nowadays for building websites with image  links.

Minimal use of Flash, Javascript Java Applets, image maps, frames, Iframes  and other

These technologies are not currently accessible to partially  sighted or physically disabled users; they can be slow loading on computers  connected via dial up and are inaccessible to search engines. Sometimes it  is necessary to use one or two of these technologies, however we limit their  use as much as possible.

Printer friendly pages

All our pages can be printed with minimal waste of paper and  without the need for separate printer friendly pages.
